Methyl Sulfonyl Methane -- MSM

By now MSM is fairly well-known in the world. When I first became interested, more than 10 years ago, it was a new and strange substance, mostly used in the health care of animals -- mostly horses.

Research into the care and health of animals is often far more free to explore non-drug sources of help. After all, there is no "health insurance" to pay for drugs for horses.MSM was developed out of one of the waste product of the paper-making industry. As paper is one of the primary indicators of economic growth (for packaging and publicity) the making of paper has increased rapidly and steadily, particularly in Asia where some of the fastest planetary expansion is taking place. Simply put, the making of paper involves cutting up wood (trees) into small chips, soaking those chips in "sulfuric acid" to remove the "glue" that holds the "cellulose" of a tree into its shape as a tree. That "glue," called "lignin," is dissolved in a vat of sulfuric acid with water and the chips of cellulose are pressed into paper. That is an over-simplification, but it will do for here. Click here for a more technical explanation of paper making.

The waste water from this process, despite the caustic nature of the sulfuric acid used as the active ingredient, turned out to be non-toxic. It seems that the combination of nature's organic material (trees) with the solvent, sulfur, produces a substance given the chemical name "DMSO."

In the early years when factories were less watched for toxic dumping, this DMSO was simply dumped into any nearby stream. The fascinating truth of this is that this "dumping" was NOT found to be harmful to fish, animals or man.

In fact, the early accidental discovery seems to have been that workers in these paper plants found that any pain (such as from arthritis) could be alleviated by simply soaking part of the body in a quantity of this DMSO fluid.

It was still a "waste product" but it now had some use and gradually it was found to be useful in the animal world, and then in the human sports world. Athletes would often take the DMSO (a liquid) to apply on knee joints or other body parts that had sports injuries such as sprains. This DMSO was remarkably effective in reducing the pain, reducing the swelling and speeding recovery to normal. Click here for a full description of DMSO. This link provides more accurate information about MSM than you will find on any web site offering MSM for sale, or offering any product where MSM is an ingredient.

There are literally hundreds of research abstracts on THIS web site, gathered by me, Karl Loren, over the years that I have been studying MSM. Click here for a page with fifty such studies.

Some bright chemist realized the the chemical formula for DMSO could be processed by a fairly simple heat process to add one atom of oxygen to the DMSO, making it DMSO2.

Simply adding one atom of oxygen to the liquid turned it into a solid, a crystal -- it was now the substance called "MSM." It has most of the same characteristics of DMSO. It is still completely non-toxic, safe to take into your mouth, eat, apply on your skin. Vibrant Skin Repair Cream is the only product using MSM that has been tested for purity by the world's largest independent testing laboratory. Click here for that documentation.

The actual laboratory analysis certificate -- all three pages -- is reproduced [on this page].  This is the actual certificate for the first shipment received by B&B International -- 25 KG.  Note that the name of the factory is blanked out, but that Vibrant Life is shown as the company for whom this was manufactured.  B&B is a division of Vibrant Life. Vibrant Skin Repair Cream is manufactured in India by the factory that manufactures MSM and whose MSM is the subject of the tests on this page. (source)

The solid crystal form of MSM comes out of the manufacturing process as a "cake" which is then ground into small particles. It can be used that way ("irregular grind") or the particles can be passed through a screen so that they are all the same size ("60 mesh" would be sixty holes per inch -- that's the size of the particle that passes through that size mesh).

There are many characteristics of MSM that lend themselves to being used as one of the main ingredients in a cream that is applied topically rather than swallowed.

The most dramatic of these is its "transdermal" nature. MSM is a "transdermal," that is, it penetrates through the skin, when applied on the skin. It not only penetrates but also carries along with it any other substance that is capable of being absorbed through the skin -- including the especially processed Ayurvedic herbs in our cream.

Click here for references to dozens of US Patent Office patents on the "transdermal" nature of MSM.

Individual cells in the body become more permeable when MSM is supplied. The research reports on this are staggering when you consider how vital it is to the skin to get nourishment INTO the skin cells where it is needed. Click here for that research.
